The Silk Road for First-Timers

The Silk Road isn't a single place, it's a thread that once connected empires, and travelling it today means crossing landscapes and cultures few visitors ever see.

Where the Silk Road begins

For a first journey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan make a compelling introduction. Azerbaijan blends a cosmopolitan capital on the Caspian with ancient fire temples and dramatic countryside, a place where east and west genuinely meet.

Turkmenistan is more remote and all the more remarkable for it, from the marble city of Ashgabat to the famous flaming crater in the Karakum Desert, sights that feel almost otherworldly.

What makes it special

Travelling the Silk Road is about the sweep of history as much as the individual sights, caravan cities, desert crossings and cultures shaped by centuries of trade. It rewards curiosity and a sense of adventure.

Because these destinations are less travelled, having a team that knows the ground makes all the difference, smoothing the logistics so you can focus on the wonder of where you are.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, avoiding both the fierce heat of high summer and the cold of deep winter. April to June and September to October are ideal windows for cities and countryside alike.

A route worth taking

A first Silk Road journey works beautifully as a focused exploration of one or two countries, rather than a sprint across many. That way you travel deeper, not just further.
