Nile Cruise or Dahabeya? Choosing Your River Journey

Sailing between Luxor and Aswan is one of travel's great experiences, but there are two very different ways to do it. Here's how to choose the river journey that fits you.

The classic Nile cruiser

A traditional cruise ship is the most popular way to sail the Nile, and for good reason. It's comfortable and social, with room to relax between temple visits, and it covers the distance between the great sites efficiently.

If you want to see the headline monuments, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae, at a steady, well-organised pace, a cruiser is an excellent choice.

The intimate dahabeya

A dahabeya is a smaller, sail-powered boat, and it offers something a cruiser can't, a slower, more intimate rhythm. With only a handful of cabins, days feel personal and unhurried, the river unspooling gently around you.

Dahabeyas can moor at quiet spots the larger boats pass by, and the pace suits travellers who want the journey itself to be the experience, not just the sites at either end.

Which is right for you?

Choose a cruiser if you value comfort, efficiency and a sociable atmosphere, and you want to see the major temples without rushing. Choose a dahabeya if you're drawn to slow travel, seclusion and the romance of sailing.

Both deliver the timeless magic of the Nile, temples rising from the banks, feluccas gliding past, sunsets over the water. It comes down to the pace and mood you're after.

Sail it your way
