Frequently asked questions

Everything travelers usually ask before a trip to Portugal. Can't find your answer? We're a message away.

When is the best time to visit Portugal?

April to October offers the most comfortable weather across the country. Spring and early autumn are especially rewarding, with warm days and fewer crowds in Lisbon, Porto and the Douro. High summer is best for beaches, while the great Fatima pilgrimages on 13 May and 13 October draw the year's largest gatherings.

Do I need a visa for Portugal?

Portugal is part of the Schengen area, so many nationalities can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism. From the last quarter of 2026, visa-exempt travelers will need an approved ETIAS travel authorisation before arrival, a quick online application with a small fee. Your passport should be issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure. Requirements vary by nationality, and our team confirms the right route for you when planning your trip.

How many days do I need in Portugal?

A focused Lisbon and Fatima trip works well over 5 to 6 days. Adding Porto and the Douro, plus Sintra and the hill towns, makes 8 to 10 days ideal for a relaxed pace. Every Tourkom itinerary is a flexible starting point we tailor to your dates and interests.

Is Portugal safe for tourists?

Portugal is widely regarded as one of Europe's safest and most welcoming destinations, with excellent tourism infrastructure. As anywhere, take normal precautions against pickpocketing in busy city areas and on public transport. We plan routes and logistics carefully and recommend checking your government's latest travel advice before you go.

What is the Fatima pilgrimage and can you arrange it?

Fatima is one of the most important Catholic Marian shrines in the world, marking the site where the Virgin Mary is reported to have appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Pilgrims visit year-round, with the largest ceremonies on 13 May and 13 October. We arrange dedicated pilgrimage journeys with Masses, candlelight processions and nearby sacred sites such as Batalha and Alcobaca.

What currency is used in Portugal?

Portugal uses the Euro (EUR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, though it is handy to carry some cash for small cafes, markets, tips and rural spots.

How do I get around Portugal?

Fast trains and modern motorways connect Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, and Fatima sits conveniently between Lisbon and Porto. For the Douro Valley, Sintra and the medieval hill towns, a private transfer or car is the most comfortable way to explore, which we can arrange as part of your program.

Do you handle MICE and group events in Portugal?

Yes. Portugal is a superb MICE destination, from conferences in Lisbon to gala dinners and incentives along the Estoril coast at Cascais and Sintra. Tell us your group size and goals and we'll build a tailored proposal.
