Frequently asked questions

Everything travelers usually ask before a trip to Maldives. Can't find your answer? We're a message away.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The dry northeast monsoon from December to April is the most reliable window, with calm seas, low humidity and the clearest underwater visibility. January to March are usually the driest, sunniest months and the peak season. The wet southwest monsoon from May to November is quieter and warmer, and it is the best time for manta rays and whale sharks.

Do I need a visa for the Maldives?

A free 30-day visa on arrival is granted to travelers of all nationalities, provided you hold a valid passport and onward or return travel. You must also complete the online Traveller Declaration (IMUGA) within 96 hours before your flight arrives. Our team confirms the current requirements when planning your trip.

How many days do I need in the Maldives?

A relaxing resort escape works well over 5 to 7 nights, allowing time to settle in, dive or snorkel and unwind. Honeymooners and divers often stay 7 to 10 nights, and split stays across two islands are a lovely way to see more. Every Tourkom itinerary is a flexible starting point we tailor to your dates.

Should I stay at a resort island or a local island?

Private-island resorts offer overwater villas, full-service dining, spas and a house reef, ideal for honeymoons and luxury stays. Local islands such as Maafushi offer guesthouses, a more authentic island atmosphere and better value, with excursions and sandbank trips nearby. Some travelers combine both, and we can plan the right balance for you.

Is the Maldives good for honeymoons?

It is one of the world's premier honeymoon destinations, thanks to private-island resorts, overwater villas with pools, secluded beaches and romantic touches like sunset cruises and dinners on the sand. Many resorts add honeymoon extras when you tell them you are celebrating, which we arrange as part of your booking.

When can I see manta rays and whale sharks?

Manta rays and whale sharks are seen year-round in the Maldives, but the wet southwest monsoon from May to November brings the largest gatherings. The famous manta aggregations at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll peak from around July to October, especially near the full and new moon. South Ari Atoll is a reliable spot for whale sharks throughout the year.

What currency should I bring?

The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US Dollars are widely accepted at resorts and on local islands. Most resort spending is charged to your room and settled by card at checkout, so you need very little cash unless you plan to visit local islands or use public ferries.

How do I get to my resort?

Almost all visitors arrive at Velana International Airport near Malé, then transfer to their island by speedboat, domestic flight or seaplane depending on distance. Seaplane transfers operate in daylight hours and offer spectacular aerial views of the atolls, and we coordinate every transfer with your flight times.
