Best time to travel

Spring and autumn, with regional variation

Because the USA spans a continent, the best time depends on where you go. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are comfortable across much of the country and ideal for combining cities with national parks. Summer is peak season for family travel and the northern parks, though the desert Southwest and the Deep South are hot and humid. Winter suits warm-weather escapes and city breaks, while high mountain parks may see closures.

Apr–JunMild spring, blossom and long days, great for cities and parks
Jul–AugPeak summer, best for northern parks; hot in the Southwest and South
Sep–OctAutumn colour and pleasant temperatures nationwide, excellent all-round
Nov–MarCity breaks and sunbelt escapes; some high-altitude parks limited
