Bosnia and Herzegovina
Medjugorje pilgrimage, Ottoman bridges and turquoise falls

About Bosnia and Herzegovina

Overview

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a small, deeply layered country where the call to prayer, church bells and rushing rivers share the same valleys. For pilgrims it is above all the road to Medjugorje, one of the world's great Catholic pilgrimage places, while for every traveler it offers the Ottoman romance of Mostar's rebuilt Old Bridge, the Austro-Hungarian and Turkish streets of Sarajevo, and the turquoise curtains of the Kravice Waterfalls. It is a place of coexistence and reconciliation, easy to fall for in just a few unhurried days.

Best time to travel

May to June and September to October

The most comfortable windows for sightseeing are late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October), when days are warm, the countryside is green or golden and crowds are thinner. July and August are the busiest and hottest months, especially in Herzegovina around Mostar and Medjugorje, and also the peak season for pilgrims. Winter (December–March) is cold and snowy inland, ideal for skiing near Sarajevo but quiet at the Herzegovina sites.
